Benefits if you are sick, or disabled

Personal Independence Payment

What is PIP?

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a disability benefit that gives you extra money to help you with daily life if you’ve an illness, disability, or mental health condition. It’s a non means-tested benefit. So, you can get it regardless of how much you earn, or whether you have savings or capital.

Personal Independence Payment is based on the level of help and support you require due to your health condition(s) or disability. It also looks at how your health condition(s) or disability  affects your ability to do certain activities.

It is made up of two components:

The Mobility component is paid if you need help getting about. This includes physically moving around and leaving your home. It’s also referred to as the mobility allowance.

The Daily living component might be paid if you need help with carrying out everyday activities, such as:

  • preparing and cooking food
  • eating and drinking
  • managing your treatments
  • washing and bathing
  • managing toilet needs or incontinence
  • dressing and undressing
  • communicating with other people
  • reading and understanding written information
  • mixing with others
  • making decisions about money
  • planning a journey or following a route.

Each component can be paid at either a standard or an enhanced rate.

Depending on how your condition affects you, it’s possible to get one component or both, and either the standard or the enhanced rate.

This is worked out using the results of an assessment.

The Scottish Government have advised that they will start moving everyone else’s PIP from August 2022 – Summer 2024. Until your PIP has moved over to the Adult Disability Payment, please continue to answer any requests from the DWP, like completing a PIP review form.

Adult Disability Payment

The Adult Disability Payment is a benefit for disabled working-age adults who live in Scotland. It’s to help with the extra costs of being disabled or having a long-term health condition.

It’s paid by Social Security Scotland.

Adult Disability Payment is replacing Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in Scotland.

Adult Disability Payment is extra money to help you if you have a disability or long-term health condition that affects your everyday life.

Adult Disability Payment is made up of 2 parts, the same as PIP :

  1. Daily Living
  2. Mobility

You may qualify for one or both parts.

The amount you get depends on how your condition affects your ability to do everyday activities and get around.

Who can get Adult Disability Payment?

You can apply for Adult Disability Payment if you have either a:

  • disability or long-term physical or mental health condition
  • terminal illness

You can still apply if you’re waiting for a diagnosis.

You need to be between 16 and State Pension age.

You cannot get Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Adult Disability Payment at the same time.

You do not need to apply for Adult Disability Payment if you already get Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Disability Living Allowance for adults from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

How much will you receive?

The Adult Disability Payment has similar criteria to Personal Independence Payment, and is paid at the same rates.

If you’re awarded the daily living part you’ll get either:

  • £68.10 a week for a standard award
  • £101.75 a week for an enhanced award

If you’re terminally ill you’ll automatically get the enhanced daily living award.

If you’re awarded the mobility part you’ll get either:

  • £26.90 a week for a standard award
  • £71.00 a week for an enhanced award

How to apply?

You’ll apply for Adult Disability Payment in 2 parts. This is unless you’re applying for someone who is terminally ill, in which case there is only one part to make the process faster. Both parts of the application should be completed within 8 weeks of each other.
